New Avengers #7-13 - Brian Michael Bendis

FYI: Not naming a collection is a bad idea. This arc is really two stories: A modern one wherein the ridiculous collection of characters that now make up the Avengers tackle rogue elements of H.A.M.M.E.R, and the other is a flashback to 1959 wherein Nick Fury assembles the "first" Avengers, largely made up of (near) immortals, allowing the line-up to consist of characters still running around in the Marvel universe. Overall, it is a pretty good story, the star being the flashback adventure. Honestly, I'm not sure why there aren't more stories like this that don't really disrupt the time-line and allows for fun creativity with third rate characters. Bendis does his usual dialogue play and it works here.
