Why Twilight is so raved about while this first book in the House of Night series by this mother-daughter team isn't is rather confusing to me. This world is just like ours except that vampires exist next to humans and sort of spontaneously develop out of normal humans. All the great thinkers, artists, and hotties are vampires (which really doesn't work as everything would be very different if, for example, Shakespeare lived a few hundred years and drank blood). One day, teenager Zoey Redbird gets the mark and has to join those becoming vampires, only to learn that "life" is not too different than what we're used to. Teen melodrama is everywhere as are clicks, sex, schoolwork, and terrible conspiracies that might end life as we know it.
