Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim CrowWriter: James Sturm; Artist: Rich Tomasso
While ostensibly about Satchel Paige, a famous black baseball pitcher, this book instead tells the life story of Emmet and his family, and how his experience with segregation is altered through contact with Paige. Set in the years of 1932 to 1944, James Sturm brings home the horrors of a segregated America as Emmet faces brutality and ignorance at the hands of his employers. Though Emmet struggles against his plight, the limits imposed on a black man make his escape impossible. Sturm's story is greatly aided by Tomasso's simple yet elegant line and two-tone coloring. Although appearing sketch-like, his renderings convey deep emotion and, where one is willing to look, depth of detail in the background of daily life. In addition, the endnotes add another layer of rich history and further reading---always a plus for historically-grounded works.
