Barbie: Rapunzel

Aside from the protagonist’s name and her long hair, this CGI film has little in common with the traditional story. Instead, it is an exciting tale of a girl trapped by an evil witch as part of a plot of unjustified vengeance. With the aid of some comrades, Rapunzel must escape and hook up with the generic Prince Charming. I watched this movie with my nieces (that’s my line and I’m not deviating from it) and was impressed with the complexity of themes and characters—for a children’s story, natch—as it largely entails conflict resolution, morality, and imagination while (blissfully) almost eliminating the “damsel in distress needing rescue from a Prince” element.
