Little Miss Sunshine

Talk about dysfunctional. Olive is a seven-year old girl who dreams about being crowned “Little Miss Sunshine” and her family rallies around her (and into a broken down van) to help. The trouble is that the family consists of a chain-smoking mother who is at wit’s end, a father who fails at motivational speaking, a brother that refuses to speak until he gets into the air force, a gay uncle just recovering from a suicide attempt, and her trainer/grandfather the drug addict. The movie has some problems, mainly that it tells us too much about the characters rather than allowing us to get to know them, but it is charming and funny, especially in the face of so many ridiculous, big budget monstrosities.
