Pan's Labyrinth – Guillermo del Toro

Between this movie and The Devil’s Backbone I’m beginning to suspect that del Toro feels the Spanish civil war was a bad thing. The year is 1944, in fascist Spain, and little Ofelia is sent with her pregnant mother to live with her despicable stepfather who commands a secluded fort against rebels that still hold out in the countryside. Ofelia meets a satyr who informs her that she is actually a princess and can return to the fairy kingdom if she can survive three tasks. The film is beautiful and terrifying to watch.
