Le Samourai

I’m sure Jean-Pierre Melville was a French genius in his time, but after over thirty years this film—of a perfectionist assassin who perform a job he doesn’t quite get away with—is woefully lacking in drama, action or interest. There isn’t a single character of depth and, while plenty of movies have style and no substance, the slower pace of a generation ago makes the intriguing story arch collapse under its own pompous weight.
