Safe Area Gorazde – Joe Sacco

I’ve gotten into fights over my fanatical dedication to the Bosnian cause, and I’ve been an outspoken supporter of realistic, historical and political comics. This painstakingly drawn tale by journalist Sacco about common people’s lives in Gorazde towards the end of the Yugoslav conflict seems to be tailor made for me. And yet, I found Sacco’s outrageously unprofessional style and single minded focus of telling a specific point of view disquieting. At best his work is slanted human interest; at worst, Sacco is a propagandist.
