I was a fan of Mike Grell since his work on Green Arrow in the late 1980s. Despite its homophobic and misogynist undertones, the stories were good action-adventures that still managed to comment on contemporary social and poltical issues. I had always meant to check out Grell's creator-owned Sable. I finally found vol 1 through Sequential Swap.Jon Sable is a fomer pentathalete and husband turned mercenary at the murder of his family. Oh, and he also makes money writing children's books. It's an odd combination; but it works. This first volume presents Sable's origin and a number of jobs that he takes on. Written in the mid-1980s, it definitely feels a bit dated (his first assignment is to protect Reagan), but for straight-forward action and drama, its a fun read.
