20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – Jules Verne

In my quest to read all the sci-fi classics that everyone talks about but few read, I indulged in this encyclopedic treatise on the aquatic world. Verne wants his novel to be reminiscent of Moby Dick, showing a “realistic” and detailed sea journey. Obviously, he lacks today’s knowledge, yet his book about a scientist, his assistant and a harpooner who get kidnapped aboard a fantastical submarine captained by the quixotic Nemo is convincing and exciting even if heavy handed and melodramatic at times.
