Son of a Witch – Gregory Maguire

In this sequel to Wicked, Maguire presents a Bildungsroman of Liir, the boy who might be the son of the Wicked Witch of the West. This story, while enjoyable, relied too heavily on the theme of reluctant hero and does a poor job of it by having Liir reject his potential interminably until he finally turns around and embraces his revolutionary cause too overwhelmingly. Typical of contemporary fiction, Maguire throws in the obligatory homosexual romance and the non-end ending.
