Okay, I completely flubbed this one. The current U.S. deficit is $7.8 Trillion, not $400. I don't know how I made that mistake. But with all the numbers (and misinformation) flying around about the status of Social Security, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that I got confused.
The point is, our current debt is a much bigger problem than Social Security is or will be. And Social Security can be largely corrected with simple measures, like raising the cap (currently stops at $90K, which means it taxes the lower classes proportionally more). The debt will crush us and our children's children.
In any case, the comic is incorrect; but I'd have to completely redo it to fix it. That ain't gonna happen. And given Bush's insane policies, we may be at $400T before too long.
