Homer. The Odyssey. Middlesex: Penguin Books, Ltd., 1985. The Odyssey is one of those books that you were supposed to read in high school but didn't, so I figured it was about time to get around to doing the real deal instead of relying on Mr. Cliff. What surprised me most about the story was how little verbiage was spent on those pieces that typically get highlighted: the sirens, the Cyclops, Scylla and Charibdis, et cetera. Each of these rated a page or two at best. Instead, most of the time is spent eating or preparing to eat. I enjoyed reading this epic, but I was a little surprised at how little adventure there really is.
